MDF, or Medium Density Fibreboard, is a popular engineered wood product made by breaking down wood residuals into fibers, combining them with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels using high temperature and pressure. It's denser than plywood and stronger and denser than particle board
MDF production involves several steps
Debarking and chipping: Logs are debarked and chipped into uniform pieces.
Chip washing: Chips are washed to remove debris and imperfections.
Defibration: Chips are steamed and fed into a defibrator to break them into fibers.
Resin and wax application: Wax and resin are injected into the blowline, where fibers are mixed. The wax enhances moisture resistance, and the resin acts as the primary binder.
Mat formation and pressing: Dry fibers are formed into a mat and pressed under high temperature and pressure, activating the resin and setting the density profile.
Finishing: Boards are cooled, trimmed, and sanded. Laminations can be added for increased strength and durability.
